Personal hygiene on extended trips (The Deodorant Debate)

Yeah, I wash. No deodorant. I try to stay clean in the woods. Plus one on the toothbrush. I dont like going to sleep covered in bug spray. Aloe on the other hand can be a godsend. Aaaaand nothing feels better than clean hair after a few days out. I may wash clothes but dont worry about them...

    Little Pic River

I dont use deodorant either...I wash.Part of my routine in the woods is to wash when I need to. Including clothes if I am out for a long enough trip. I dont like going to sleep covered in bug spray so I usually keep sleeping clothes separate. It's all just part of being comfortable.

    Fire Irons

I seldom cook on fire ...when I do its pretty simple. Usually on a stick or a spit, or in foil pouches. On any well used site around here you can usually find a fridge or oven grate laying about that everyone uses.

    Churchill River Country - Saskatchewan

Beautiful trip so far. Very indicative of back country in Canada. And yes, Manitoba has some great routes also. I have paddled most of the routes that Charles does. He is into day trips on very small rivers that are a lot of fun. Saskatchewan has tons of water to explore if you are a bit...

    Looks like a Chestnut Chum

looks to be the real thing Robin. I see the ghost of a decal on the front deck and that mark is too big for a Pete. The price is right thats for sure. I hear ya about the 40 lb thing YC.

    Little Pic River

The only saw that will cut the mustard on a trip like that will have " STIHL " written on the side of it. Then cutting ports is no great worry, even for me.

    Gloom and Doom

I already have a barn full of canoes of various types, albeit only one faux chestnut now. Had they offered porters or sherpas to go with that, I may have weakened.

    car topping techniques

Cars are harder for me to load than trucks. A pivoting t bar is a nice option but I dont have a hitch to put it in. I mostly just walk up alongside the car and lean over to place the boat on the racks. Yes it is a bit awkward but I figure if an old lady like me can muscle it on the pretty much...

    Gloom and Doom

I was in Vancouver for December one year and we had fog the entire month. Makes people insane. I am lucky in that I have good coping skills. Sitting with coffee watching the snow fall from my living room works. Having a shop where I can overhaul tractors and cars or builld canoes seems to help...

Does this drive anyone else nuts?

I could be nice and say kayaks are more intuitive which is why they are easier to learn how to paddle. I find for certain people though, canoes are much more intuitive. Some people take to them immediately. I myself prefer canoes, but have taken to kayaking because that is what the GF paddles...

Risk management is sucking life out of paddling trips

I have been taking my nieces on trips the past couple of years. One of them is now taking her friends out on trips herself. I would love to be able to take more young women out and show them they can do this stuff on their own. What I dont like seeing is the posers who make videos and give a...
