    Quotes to Trip By

We always used to say...".hey man, if you're not where you're at, you're nowhere. " ....stoner logic, meaning live in the moment. I will often say things to karin like...." Yaaaargghhh, lay us along side at pistol shot ..." at which point she looks at me all funny like. Other times I will...

    Getting Fleeced

We had them in the army, they were actually too warm. I prefer a bib overall or wind pants.

    Glowing stove pipe

This is s very timely thread as I am renting a hot tent next week. It is already set up on a plywood deck , a 10 x 12 wall tent with a rather largish round stove. Pictures and report to follow.

Throwing line over a tree limb, and a recent revelation

I tie my food barrel to a tree with a pot on top as a warning device. It's best to have a clear field of fire between the tent and the barrel. Make it tough for critters to take and give them some incentive not too. I am good with firing a banger at them to start, because I would rather...

    Tripping Plans for 2020

I had a really good summer this past one and want to carry on that trend. Like Mem, I have a port cutting trip planned, with my neice. If done early it should rock. May long looks like a girls trip on Wallace / Siderock lakes. Karin is thinking of coming out with us. That would be nice. I may...

Chukuni Outdoor Supply in Red Lake, Ontario

Outfitting is a tough business especially in a small town. A friend of mine has a fishing camp in that area and it is a reallllllly short season. You really do need another income stream in order to survive. Outfitters come and go here...some really good and some not so good. If anyone has a...

    Pack Capacity

We have more packs than we can ever use on a single trip. A couple of Eureka 115 li dry packs are the favourites but also a Woods 200, a CCS canoe pack, courtesy of Brad, a couple of 30 li barrels, one with a harness, my Cdn jump ruck, a couple of random frame/rucksack combinations and on...

Starting From Scratch: My Solo Canoe Shortlist

I have to ask....am I missing something here with the obsession with light boats? I am 61 now with a bad heart and I regularly portage 60 pound boats. I dont find it any great hardship. Yes we have a 40 pound Swift Mattawa but its my least favourite canoe to paddle, and that is what I spend most...

    wind.

My only caveat is that it is cold out there right now. Use an extra layer of caution. Cold water and no one around can go bad really quicly. In the summer, big deal...at the worst you are swimming. My upper limit for wind is 30km/hr. And that is not a "go" speed, that is a "can I get back"...

    Completed

Very nice. Our first build was a cottage cruiser from Bear Mountain. It gets used and abused a lot. I have ideas rolling around my head for the next one constantly...lol. We also put tanks in ours.

    Measuring and changing rocker

It sure sounds like the bow is digging in. Negative rocker...wow, that sounds pretty bad. You have to measure right at the tip of the bow and stern...maybe sit it on a flat surface upright and stand back to eyeball it. Did it sit out in the hot hot sun somewhere?

    Waterproofing your Gear

That looks good Eric. You covered all the bases. A helpfull and usefull video. I especially liked the demonstration of the barrel floating by the swamped canoe.

    tandem stability?

Does the other person have much paddling experience? Most people try to turn around to talk to you and that invariable ends up with both of you in the water. Other things like they sit on one side of the boat so you have to counter or it leans. I am much more comfortable in my boats solo than...
