wound up ordering some 1/2" minicel and some 1/2" neoprene - Glen and SK were both right, the neoprene feels way better - so the neoprene will become my kneeling pads, set up similarly to Glen's SRT picture, and I'll use the minicel atop the rails of the rack i built for my truck.

if you're in select parts of the west, bark from a fallen doug fir makes exceptional coals for cooking. i've not yet found anything in the NE that's near as good, unfortunately. i usually settle for punky-but-dryish wood.

wondering what density foam people prefer for kneeling pads? I like whatever is in my MR Indy - it's 1/2" thick, but have no idea what density it is.

I've got a fiberglass Mad River Independence. Quite like it for the most part. Wish there were a touch more room under the seat for my big feet, and my ankles can really get to hurting after a couple hours of kneeling and paddling, but it seems to be a great jack-of-most-trades boat.
