    Wood and canvas paddlers ...

WW, sorry I’m just now seeing your question. I don’t think the setup I have would adapt to anything other than scuppered gunwales. I should say that I have a bell composite canoe with a permanent wooden kneeling thwart and I don’t find either setup to be more comfortable than the other...

A short video of my recent North Maine Woods trip

Enjoyed your video after taking the puppy out on a soggy hike. if you didn’t know that tent had been cut down you would swear Robin was 10’ tall! barry

    Seat Webbing Color?

Whoa wait!.....if you have the materials and motivation to do an authentic family crest plaid, I consider this conversation over! And that would need to be it’s own thread with your usual level of detail of course.

    Seat Webbing Color?

IMO I’d roll with the black. It will fade to a different shade of black instead of pink...which is not red.

Tales of loaner gear broken or lost

I ran the lower Yough in my shredder with a kayaking friend of mine at 8.5’ and climbing. The river was huge and I lent him my spare Werner Bandit. About 3/4 down we got ejected in a hydraulic. I got the shredder and myself to a safe ralley point and a couple minutes later he sits down next...

    New Skill for Old Guys

If you stick with it you will be learn(ing) to fly fish the rest of your life. You will never learn how to fly fish. I’ve been learning to tie flys and fly fish for 30 years now, 300+ days a year at one point. I would spend 4 hours with someone who can teach you basic casting and if you...

    Winter Footwear

Miendl uninsulated boots down to upper teens than change to Moose hide muks. If paddling in sub freezing temps I wear NRS neoprene boots over thick wool socks. For some reason I like crocs with heavy wool socks when I’m next to a campfire. After setting camp and gathering wood the snow is...

    Wood and canvas paddlers ...

Glen, that “seat” moves a little but with the straps properly tightened not too bad. But, I’ve never used it as a seat proper. With all my clothes and gear on, I probably weight near 250# and while the seat is plenty stout, I’d worry about the stress to the inwales. So I purchased with the...

Otter tail paddle, when do you like to use yours?

I use mine for wilderness lake regions. I don’t use them on primarily river trips. For those I use modern style blades from Mitchell and Sanborn. If your paddling is in slow deep rivers the Ottertail/beaver tails would be fine though. Or canals down in FL. barry

    BIG Dog Solo

I had an 86# Chessie and I weigh 215# in socks and skivies so I’m already at 300# without my tripping clothes, pfd, etc. I’ve always preferred a tandem with a bigger dog. I never felt like I gained anything by paddling with her in a solo. Without the dog I would paddle a dedicated solo. I...

    What Paddle Otter I Buy?

I primarily sit and am pretty casual about paddling on lake country trips. They are comfortable paddles for all day and move a surprising amount of water. The RK/Fishell paddles are varnished but my Badger paddles are all oiled and I favor the feel of the oil finish over the varnish. Side...

    What Paddle Otter I Buy?

I have several Fishell Paddles in the modified Ottertail model. Solid cherry. I like them very much for paddling lake country solo with a prospector canoe. https://us.fishellpaddles.com/produc...tail-in-cherry Badger paddle has some nice tail style paddles. I’m not sure what they are making...

Show pictures of your tent(s) on a canoe trip

Hyper lite makes the cubes fiber version. It will only be used for three season backpacking so light needs to be its primary attribute. I agree a snowtrekker would be sweet but here in the Appalachian mountains it would be too burdensome to use for winter camping. I might be willing to carry...

Learning Experience - now, what should I have learned?

sailsman63, I know if I get knocked off my line and I'm out of options and things look grim, I point my bow into the teeth of the monster and paddle hard with a Mohican Whoop. God help any dinky kayaker who chooses to stay on the wave! If you always carry a water bottle, wrap some quality...

I have a Go lite version of the tent Canotrouge has and same dimensions. They called it the Shrangri La 4+. I've had three adults, two labs, and a chessie in there. I have a bug net floor combo, and also just a floor (no net) for it. I love it, and am saving up for cuben fiber version. I...

Learning Experience - now, what should I have learned?

Pictures of moving water are often deceiving, but possibly the green slot in the middle would have a little more water. The rock you circled doesn’t look to have much water over it on the downstream side. Locally here, my main paddling is on rivers and they are very low right now. I haven’t...

    Sellers Remorse

Sounds like you gave as much advice and information as he needed to before he drove off. I go through those situations all the time around here. Even today on the side of a mountain where a family on mountain bikes showed up on a trail that I have never seen bikes on in 20 years. I’m sure they...
