    PIctures of celebrities in canoes

I don’t know, compared to Kate, William seems to be lilly dipping’. The red-headed step child seems to be getting it done.😄

    Open Canoe Roll

Right on! A boat full of water is hard to paddle. I used to tell newbies who thought a roll would make them a class IV-V boater that a solid brace was way more important than a roll.

Things that interfere with or otherwise screw up canoe trips

I would not consider an extra tent but I do have a 10x10 CCS tarp and have been carrying an 8 oz 8.5x8.5 cuben fiber tarp. I could make do with those two if my tent were to completely fail. Edit- I missed the barrens part. Tarps may not be the best backup there. Most of my tents weigh less...

Couldn't Resist: 15' B.N. Morris Customized Reproduction by Rollin Thurlow in As-New Condition

Dacron would be my choice. I treat mine just like my composite boats and it’s never needed a repair. The same boat in canvas could be as much as 20 lbs heavier. I carry the same roll of duct tape no matter what boat I’m bringing. Barry

    Lights for Tripping

A Fenix headlamp and UCO candle lantern. I don’t bring it in a tent and I don’t read on trips so these are all I need.

    Tent Pole Problems x 2

They’re not for everyone but pyramid style tents may be worth a look. I have three of them. They take a little practice setting up but they have some notable features. They have very light weight to space ratio and you can stand in the middle to change clothes in many of them. They are...

    Canoe Magazine

Sorry, the newsletter was called Che-mun and somehow affiliated with Ottertooth. They ceased issues 2015, but many are still available as pdfs….not something you can sit and leaf through. https://www.hacc.ca/che-mun

    Canoe Magazine

I never had print copies but have read some good stories on North Country trips in a periodical called Ottertooth. http://www.ottertooth.com/temagami.htm I first learned about it when a member of Solotripping by the name Trapper John attempted the Hayes River. Barry

    Canoe Seal Launch

You just know it’s a bunch of kayakers in black skirts laughing in the background. He could have lost some chicklets at the end of that launch! Barry

    Canoe Magazine

I used to have a subscription to Paddling Magazine and same as yknpdlr and pblanc, there was more fluff than content. Seemed like they only had a couple writers and most “articles” were just a couple paragraphs and a picture….kinda like it was written for a younger generation with attention...

    Paddling in a lightning storm

Many times I’ve layed in my tent listening to the storm raging outside and telling my dog to go back to sleep. I know it’s not the best place to be if there are trees, but I’ve never had the will to get out of my warm, dry bag and seek safety in the rain. Barry

    Paddling in a lightning storm

I think I would get off the water and hunker down near shore. There's a lot of downed trees and boulders in the North Country that may serve as a good spot if there's a chance the storm may bring down more trees around you. And I would try to use my pack and/or pfd to sit on. I've seen some...

Wood paddles - which style and maker do you like?

Going back through the Facebook page you will find some beautiful one off paddles Peter made as well as really old Mitchell’s that he refinished and documented the process in pics. I think the last entry is a picture of a wood frames mountain bike he collaborated on. It’s beautiful but too...

Wood paddles - which style and maker do you like?

I don't know for sure what Mitchell Paddle's status is, but I have tried to reach them by phone and email and no response. The Temporarily Closed status comes from Mitchell's Facebook page which doesn't appear to be updated in a very long time. I have seven Mitchell paddles so at this point...

Wood paddles - which style and maker do you like?

For straight wood paddles I have had great experience with Mitchell Paddles for the last 20 years. For traditional tail style I like Fishell and Badger. Mitchell paddles has been “temporarily closed” for nearly 2 years and leftover retail stock might only come from local shops. I keep on the...

Wow 120 canoes delivered Down Under...no wonder its getting so hard to find canoes in the US! that's good though....maybe they will dilute the kayak population. Cheers, Barry

    Greetings from Down Under…

Welcome from Pennsylvania USA Spike! Great video and great setup. The ducks got my dog all fired up. I liked the end when you got in the wrong side of van after signing off!🙂 Australia always intrigued me but after watching all those nature shows I realized that anything that is alive there...

    Ranting

They say I’ve come with less than I should rightfully possess I say the more I buy the more I’m bought And the more I’m bought the less I cost —Joe Pug. hymn #101 I may be letting a Mad River Outrage X go. Only needs a d-ring glued in behind the front bag cage. I’m heading to Dolly Sods...

Weather Forecasts (are today’s whippersnappers spoiled?)

I don’t have much faith in forecasts. I think the most accurate meteorologists are the ones who are non-committal and just say some clouds and sun and seasonable temperatures. Especially when looking at forecasts more than 24 hours out. I’m good with whatever is coming and have never...

Bent vs. Straight Shaft Paddles—A Jacobson vs. Callan Debate

I like to have both when I’m tripping in composite boats and light weight gear. I paddle those different. When I paddled a week in ADK last October I had a MItchell carbon straight (surreal?) and a black pearl bent. I didn’t use the bentshaft the entire time. I did determine that i much...
