Mini-Whelan, or "How small is too Small?"

Been watching this thread with interest. Thought I'd add my 2 cents. The Whelen design is intended, as has been mentioned to have that big open front for use with a fire. Just like a Baker Tent the back wall is intended to reflect heat back down upon the sleeper. As a by product this means the...

    Breathable waist high waders

One thing not talked about is that high waders and dry suits can form an air pocket at the foot end, lifting your feet up and unless wearing a good pfd or life jacket, your head goes down. Makes swimming more tiring. Whatever option you decide on I recommend practicing a capsize and swim plus...

    Another Million Dollar Idea

I have done it with one of my small twig stoves before. Set up on the lid without the stove base and build a small fire in that. Otherwise, ditch the dutch oven and cook them in a fry pan on a stove. Find a lid that fits or take some aluminum foil to cover the pan. Or get a take-apart Backpacker...

Show pictures of your tent(s) on a canoe trip

Have you tried the mesh inners for the Hillebergs? Wondering if one would be good for our Nallo. I do like how we can open the tail end of the Nallo right up and, using the guy lines, roll the front of the tent back to the first pole.

    Dogs. Especially canoe dogs

Lot's of sniffles and smiles from this post. For any of you with older dogs who seem to be suffering with stiff joints maybe give Glucosamine tablets a try. We started one a day on Holly after she had a month or two of problems following hiking trips, may just be coincidence but she has greatly...

    Dogs. Especially canoe dogs

Doug Sorry to hear you have lost your friend. Keep her memory alive but get another dog, it's the best way to stay young. This is Holly. Nine years old and stil plays like a puppy. Comes paddling though she's not a swimmer. Comes camping at -30 and never steals the blankets (much). If anyone is...

Atuk or Esker. 4 sided or 5

From the ATUK website "We are not producing or selling tents on others brands than our, ATUK None of our ATUK tents are sold in store, they are only avalable at ATUK Original design by Guy Hébert"

Atuk or Esker. 4 sided or 5

Nope. Guy is quite adamant on his website that he doesn't make tents for anyone else. Go ATUK in the 7 oz fabric. Lighter and packs much smaller. As to number of sides, unless the side panels are as long as a sleeping pad there is a lot of wasted space up against the wall. No reason you couldn't...

Another New Satellite Messenger/SOS Device: Zoleo

Cheaper than the Solar Flare I was looking at this weekend and it had no SOS button so everything had to be via your phone, I thought that could be a real problem. Last thing I would want to be fussing with in an emergency is my phone.

    Glowing stove pipe

I think one issue is a red glowing pipe could become more brittle and could crack and will also burn through more quickly. The other issue is you are losing heat out up the stove pipe, less of an issue in a pyramid with more pipe inside the tent but in an Snowtrekker you'll be heating the...

Swiss Army Knife: Blade and Tools Preferences?

For info. up here in Canada, and in many other parts of the world, we can fly with knives that have blades less than 6cm long. I like my little SAK Classic. I use the scissors for all sorts of tasks from cutting tape to trimming toenails. I usually have another bigger knife along and a...

Zip Lock Bags on Canoe Trips

We'll use large ziplocks for organising meal groups but dry meal ingredients will go in wax paper bags, taped up with paper masking tape. The great thing about these is that they burn really well so can be used for fire lighting. We do use small ziplocks for wet ingredients like pastes though...

Not too far away, 90 minutes or so. I know a man with a truck if needed. I have my work one but aren't allowed to use that for personal use.

    Portage rating scale

We've found that water level can be one of the biggest factors as to whether a portage is a pleasant experience. Low water exposes all those slippery slime covered rocks to stumble over, along with the aforementioned loon crap. High water can make take out/put in locations dangerous if close to...

    Thanksgiving

Thanks BB Power went out Friday morning at 4 am. Groundwater is very high this year so no power equals no sump pump equals flooded basement if nothing is done. Fortunately we were only bailing for 4 hours or so before MB Hydro got the power up again. Glad we weren't further west. Rest of the...
