    Grail of Bail (bailing scoop)

When I was on a lake in Verendrye I got caught in a sudden intense downpour. The water quickly rose to 3-4 inches in the bottom of the boat before I made it to shore. I didn’t have a bailer. It would have been handy.

    New-to-me First Aid Info

^ Yes, exactly. You can bleed out in seconds, you can do without air for a few minutes. The course says that for outdoor sports, severe wounds and broken bones are most common. That said, most examples were hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing.

    New-to-me First Aid Info

The online wilderness first aid course I am taking is excellent. You can see it at survivalmedonline.com. It is also cheap. There are a few things that I have never heard before and thought I would pass on. At least these are the two I can think of at this time. 1. You can use HONEY as a...

CanoeTripping.net Shirts, Hats or Other Merchandise

I'd purchase some bandanas if they were cotton. Bandanas, at least for my useage, need to be absorbant and polyester and bamboo do not cut it. But that is just me.

A good quality t-shirt would be great. I can only wear 100% cotton, though.

I hope there’s enough rain to dampen the wildfires in your area, Ralph, as well as across Canada. Stay safe.

Swift Keewaydin 17 canoe for sale

What is GDF/guide fusion? Swift lists expedition Kevlar, Kevlar fusion and carbon fusion for its layups. How much does the boat weigh? I‘m in Florida and am considering this.

    Paddling Helps Memory

I took notes or a log on most of my trips. I can even lay my hands on most of them. But they are sketchy, some of them. I wish I had written more. The paper photos from film cameras on early trips are faded. I haven’t written up day trips in Florida. I wish I had.

    Hello from the UK

Welcome, Sonia. Swans are unusual for most of us on this side of the Atlantic.

    Map Fans

I also carry three compasses distributed among packs. Also knives and Bic lighters (used to be waterproof matches.) I was taught to keep enough supplies in each pack to live on in case you lose some. I find compasses useful for lake crossings. With a bearing, I can paddle straight across to the...

    Map Fans

I use a map and compass. On a long remote trip I carry three copies. One to use and the other two as backups in separate packs. I’m not personally concerned if map reading becomes obsolete, so long as I can get paper maps. I mean, I don’t think it will be the end of civilization. I do always...

    Another Lost Year

Black Fly, I am so sorry for your injury what with recovery stealing another summer for canoe tripping. While it will take longer than you want, I wish you a speedy recovery. A few years back a broken ankle interfered with my tripping and I missed a year and then also had to make adjustments. I...

    Fresh Fruit On Trips

I used to have Tang every morning on canoe trips. Cuties also peel easily. I rarely bring fresh fruit. Dried mango and dried pineapple are my go-to fruit for tripping.

    Wildfires in Canada!

Here's a graphic of the files in Quebec. [Now I can't get it to upload accurately.) It certainly looks like a lot of good canoeing areas are burned or in danger of being burned. I had been looking at Woodland Caribou and it has burned many times in the past few years. All my prayers to the...
