New Ash Gunwales

Alan, i didn't like the idea of a notch in the gunwale for a few reasons, I notched my canoe instead and reinforced that area with some glass. I know most would say not to do this, but it just seemed easier, and I didn't like the idea of a tiny piece of gunwale hanging out past the boat with so little meat left in it where it would be notched. So, to answer your question, yes i notched the boat and not the gunwale.

Nothing wrong with that but normally the inwale would die into the stem of the boat and not continue to the exterior. The outwale would then be cut off just longer than the hull and rounded over.

Not sure I can visualize that, i will have to look around, I just looked at photos of other NorthStar boats and mimic them, this is kind of what I had seen for the most part.

I did see this before i started and considered it, this must be what you mean, i wasn't sure which i like better to be honest, and most new models seem to have inwales pass all the way. but i do like the simplicity of this.Screenshot 2025-01-29 155908.png

Yes, that 2nd image you posted is what I was thinking of. Another one here:

When I've build canoes with decks I ran the decks all the way to the stem and the inwale died into the deck.

Ok, I see, I'm on the fence, but everyone of those "looks" easier than what I did, of course, next time I guess.

I might be bias but ZAR stains are awesome. I have been using ZAR Aged Bourbon stain with Watco exterior Oil on top for awhile now and love the look. I have been the ZAR sales rep for PA, NY, OH, WV, and KY for the last 3 years so that's where the bias comes in. lol. I was with Sherwin Williams for 18 years before that and would still say ZAR is the best if I went back there tomorrow. It does add a little more maintenance touching up sometimes but does away with the black spots ash gets so it's a give and take. My thoughts. Thanks Dustin
