Loadout for Upcoming 30 Day Trip

Glenn,

I never carry a gun anywhere and I've never taken one on a canoe trip. I've had this shotgun for a few years and in researching the trip it seemed like a reasonable thing to do. I have a cheap dry bag that it is in. I've field stripped it and coated it with Eezox for rust protection. I have not determined yet exactly how I will carry it. That is something I'll work out in the next few days when I test pack everything. I may strap it to the top of my Redleaf spray cover. That is what I'm leaning toward without the benefit of actually trying it yet.View attachment 141803

Are you declaring or smuggling?

I just wanted to ensure that you were aware of the rules on transporting firearms into Canada.

I'm sure @recped was just trying to draw attention to Canada's strict gun laws in a facetious manner. The various states in the USA have a web of differing gun laws, too, which anyone with a gun driving from state to state has to be familiar and comply with.

On my trips north I've used a waterproof scabbard, with the opening towards me just in case it's needed while in the boat (and under the spray deck if used). On shore it comes out of the case, and I air out the case just in case(?). It's a roll-top soft Kolpin case they don't make any more. It may float, but it's tied in so it doesn't matter.

Tried loading out the canoe today. Still a few things to figure out (I didn't attach painters and lines to my gear), but this is the general idea I'm thinking:

This is more than I've ever carried on a trip. Since originally posting I have expanded my gear list somewhat, mainly because we are not going to be portaging this trip. The tan bag has a second bear can with drinks and a few snacks (In the future I am going to do my best to save space, more efficiently, pack the big barrel, and include drinks there). The red bag has camera and electronics.

Everything behind the seat is pretty much what. I routinely carry, my portage pack loaded as shown previously, although I did put a pan and cooking grate on the outside. In front of the seat there is a thwart bag with fishing tackle, plus a cup holder and a mount for my son's borrowed GoPro. Also included here are a fishing rod, net, and spare paddle:
