The Strange Things You See on the River

When we were kids we built simple little rafts and went out on Lake Michigan never considering that the lake is maybe 90-100 miles wide. At least these guys were smart enough to stay on a small river.

Heard and seen. Paddling by the Baby’s Grave campsite on the St. Croix (Maine) at 7 a.m. or so we passed four young men playing Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” at full volume while cooking breakfast. We picked up the pace to put some distance between us and them.

On the Allagash in 2019, downstream from East Twin Brook Campsite, we saw a bloated, dead moose floating or lodged on the river-right bank. Then on the St. Croix in 2020, just as I was about to throw the canoe on my shoulders and begin the portage around Canoose Ledges, I suddenly heard "How are you doing today?" and a border patrol agent stepped out of the woods. These might not be "strange," but they are slightly uncommon sights.

actually, at a very large and popular provincial park here a few years back I saw 3 floating moose, one of which was unfortunately jabbed at by one of the youth and immediately ruptured like a putrid balloon filled with maggots....
same trip we talked to 2 different CO's while in the backcountry, and one OPP officer who was checking for safety equipment at the put-in- all three warned us not to draw any water from a certain stretch of water due to a "floater" upstream. I was told that in an average year there are over a dozen "winter kill" moose and deer in the park, most from going through thin ice...

We had two renegade moose from Northern Minnesota come down to Iowa for a visit this winter. One made its way back to from whence it came but the other went through thin ice and drowned.

There was some controversy that the moose got a bit harassed by drone photographers and that's what drove it to the thin ice. Unsure if there's any truth to that or not. There were definitely drone shots of it standing on the ice but I don't know if it was being photographed when it went down.
