    Rectangular Bear Can

Open up the packages and pour the contents into the canister? Then just scoop it out by the cupful at mealtime? ;-) In smaller cans, e.g. the Bare Boxer, I sometimes from the perimeter to the center. For bigger cans, like the Counter Assault Bear Keg, I stack more and try. But it's all just...

    Question about Maine backcountry camping

We used Norm at Pelletier's for both a shuttle on the Allagash and to stay the night before we put in. I would absolutely recommend and use him again. FWIW, private guides, such as Norm and his staff, do the shuttles around Chase Rapids, not the rangers.

    Question about Maine backcountry camping

NB: The White Mountain National Forest is almost entirely in New Hampshire.

    Hatchet or Saw?

I've carried a full ax, a hatchet, a 4 lb Estwing maul (Fireside Friend), an 18" Corona pruning saw, and a 10" Corona folding pruning saw. We occasionally use a fire to cook with the Dutch oven, but usually any fire is for ambiance. The 10" Corona has been more than good enough to easily provide...

Results of the more stringent 2024 bear-proofing food storage rules in the BWCA

If you go the Ursack route, the "Allmitey" line protects against all animals. The non-Allmitey bags are susceptible to the chewing of rodents and other small mammals.

    Oswegatchie River, October 10 and 11th 2024

Time to put a bear can in one of your packs. Even though we can often get away with not properly storing our food, as good stewards of the water and woods, we should be using animal-proof containers especially at established campsites. Furthermore, the benefit of a good night's sleep, assured...

Maybe the title of the thread should be "Outdoor Incompetence." 😁

Advice on Far North/Arctic Canoe trip

You can legally fly with stoves and empty liquid fuel bottles. https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/camp-stoves https://www.msrgear.com/blog/flying-with-a-camping-stove/ You can also bring one book of safety (non-strike-anywhere) matches in your carry-on luggage...

Questions for my trip to Labrador and Newfoundland

@Keeled Over , I am envious! Newfoundland is one of my favorite places in the lower 48 and Canadian provinces. I've been up there twice, though it's been a couple of decades since I was last there. Hopefully not much has changed. Some thoughts and suggestions: 1) You'll need that month...

    Solo - fears and boredom

I haven't done much solo paddling, but I do most of my hiking solo, and occasionally backcountry ski solo. Most of my hikes include significant amounts of bushwhacking and I navigate solely by map, compass, with the occasional assistance an analog altimeter. I enjoy hiking with one or two other...

Has anyone been around the Whitney Wilderness Area this season?

To be pendantic, a war machine is not freedom. Rather, at its best, it represents the defense of freedom. At its worst, it represents imperialism. The sound of freedom are the chants of a march protesting the actions of our government. The sight of freedom is a church, a synagogue, and a mosque...

Has anyone been around the Whitney Wilderness Area this season?

Not millions, but hundreds of billions, with the whole program, including operations and support, costing well over $1 trillion. The cost per plane is about ~$80 million. If you work and live around Burlington, Vermont, it can be awful. The deafening roar is extremely disruptive. You can't...

    Moose River launch closed?

Unless there is a specific reason to believe otherwise, I wouldn't assume that it was closed in May for anything other than flooding or repair. Both I'd think would be likely in May. When we did the Moose in August 2022, the road was flooded and the attendant at Attean Landing advised us to park...

St. Regis Canoe Area - 8/29 to 9/1

Awesome! That's a great location for a child's first trip. I love the idea of giving your kids their own frying pans and letting them cook their own food. Last summer I took my son on his first canoe trip and we paddled from the Lake Kushaqua dam through the Seven Carries to Little Clear Pond...
