    2-Man Tent Recommendations

no experience with the AM Lynx, but we've had an AM Zephyr 3-man for some years now and it's a great tent. 6lbs weight is good for a 3-man, it's comfortable for 2 people on an extended trip, quick to pitch, and has stood up to wind and rain well. Originally bought it on sale as an extra tent...

    Questions on Kevlar canoe repair

I have an old Seda Scout kevlar with similar crazing in several places. Gave them all a coat of epoxy and regretted it. My epoxy skills aren't very good and it looks rather worse than the crazing did. Also I'm not convinced it was even necessary.. painting will probably help.

    Fishing Anchor Mount

On my solo kevlar boat, I do something similar to Alan's plan. A carabiner on a line from the thwart to the stern, the anchor line runs through the carabiner. When anchored the carabiner slides to the back so the line is off the stern. When retrieving, there is another line to carabiner to pull...

How much SALT do you take on a trip?

a small film canister (remember those ? ) of salt for fish in case I actually catch one.. plenty of salt in any commercial dehydrated meal, won't need to add to those. as you mention - it is also useful sometimes for first aid etc. Since the last trip with a young man who had severe gastro...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

no - though when I look at the one in the link, it's almost identical.. mine is a fiberglass Werner, a model no longer made. I've battered it nearly into submission ;-) carry it as the spare these days, in whitewater it's always the Werner CF Bandit.

    Millbrook Outrage

excellent ! didn't even know there was a composite Outrage.. I have the original Royalex version, still going strong. I used to paddle it at 175-180lbs for tripping with another 30-40lbs of gear loaded in, it was never an issue. So I agree the weight limit of 180-190 is very conservative...

Taking another look at the Werner Bandit and how to use it.

my wife uses a carbon fiber Bandit for all paddling now, much prefers it to the old Werner traditional shape. This is for whitewater, river tripping, and tandem front in flatwater. She doesn't paddle flatwater solo though.. my CF Bandit was an accident, bought a used canoe and they threw in...

    Old Town Penobscot 17

pretty good for the price.. I've just put web seats over the old cane on a couple of older boats, it's worked well. we had a Penobscot 186 in R-lite for some years, it was a terrific boat - pretty quick on flatwater, capable in whitewater. AKA 'The mothership', biggest boat on any trip we...

Good fish/depth finder and what power source?

that's a really neat setup.. very nice, thank you for showing.. I had a small Garmin, with a little lead-acid 12V which would last for my season before needing a recharge, typically an outing a week for 2-3 months. A piece of Velcro glued to the bottom of the boat worked to hold the...

Video, of a guy tipping a canoe over in the middle of a Minnesota Lake

that canoe looked like a yard sale even before he tipped it over.. no organization, no discipline, not a good start throw it all in the boat and hope the merciless gods of wind and water will treat you kindly for your ignorance ? not a plan. I've thought about an electric motor, but would...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

whitewater: Dagger Caption, 14'4" and 70lb ow outfitted for both solo and tandem, mostly solo these days as my wife has jumped ship and my boys are out of the house.. great big-water boat, here on Zoom Flume on the Arkansas, many years ago.. also works well for whitewater tripping which I...

Upper Missouri River Guides: Montana Canoeing

we did the trip in 1991, reading the L&C journals in a binder which the Ft Benton museum allowed us to check out for the trip. We found some old retired guy in Ft Benton to shuttle for us, don't recall that it was particularly expensive. First 3 days were delightful, then ran into stiff...

A cautionary tale of deaths on Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone.

we did a trip there in the early 90s, came out on 4th of July into a snowstorm ;-) Up until then it had been cold but calm, a good trip. On the way out we paddled around the edge of the lake not more than 50ft from shore, and the same on Lewis Lake. It was chilling to see how big the waves...

Poll: How often do your canoe trips include fishing?

some of my trips are primarily to go fishing.. with the family along, my wife's patience for me fishing has diminished over the years ;-) so typically will have fishing gear but not use it until in camp.
